Chapter 16

As the limousine pulled up to the runway to meet the Mazrui company aircraft, Kamau glanced at his finely constructed timepiece. He had arrived within one minute of his scheduled departure time. His brother Kaleb was in the cockpit.

“Hey, Kamau, business must have been good for you to cut it this close. This is a first—Kamau Mazrui, the man who keeps everybody else on track, made his flight with only a minute to spare.”

Kamau ignored Kaleb’s observation. “Kaleb, I thought Mohammed was scheduled to pilot this flight.”

“Things happen, my brother. He called in sick. That seems to be happening on a pretty regular basis these days. It’s being looked at. He may not be with us much longer.”

Kamau responded quietly, “I see.” He entered the slick, well-appointed passenger compartment of the plane and began to make himself comfortable. As soon as the plane was in the air, he flipped open his cell, retrieved Adana’s stored number and dialed it. She answered on the third ring.

“Hello, Kamau.”

Hearing her low, sweet voice brought back memories of entering her body. He could feel his temperature rise and his body harden. He swallowed and as he spoke, his voice was filled with need for her.

“I’m on the plane. I made the departure time by one minute.” His conversation was about the flight, but his thoughts were of her long, exquisite limbs wrapped around his hot, aching body. He could hear her calling his name. He could still taste her lips, could feel her hands burn into his skin. He was caught in the emotional experience he knew as Adana Terrell.

“I’m happy that you made the flight.” Adana was having a similar experience on the other end of the telephone line. She was still aching for Kamau’s torturously exquisite lovemaking. He had brought senses to life she had not known existed. She knew she was vulnerable. This was, after all, a man still tied in some ways to a dead wife, but just the sound of his voice sent her spiraling headlong into whatever perilous territory that awaited her. He made her feel alive, protected and thoroughly loved. For the first time in her life, she knew what it felt like to be loved by a man, a real man. She had seen it but she had never felt it.

“Kamau, I am missing you already, but I need to say that while we figure this out, neither of us should feel pressured, no matter how tempting to throw caution to the wind and run with our emotions before we know what we want to do.”

“Adana, I am sorting through many things. I must be honest, the way you give yourself to me, the way you come to me leaves me more confused and more satisfied than I have ever been. Sexual encounters in my world, in my marriage, were for procreation. If pleasure was a by-product, then one considered oneself fortunate. With you, my darling Adana, there is only pleasure—pleasure so excruciating it is gloriously painful.
